As a fellow writer, I know how nerve-wracking it can be to send your work out into the world. The one thing worse than waiting to hear back from agents or dealing with rejection - and let’s face it, that’s a pretty inevitable part of being a novelist - is leaving the book you worked so hard on to sit in a drawer, gathering dust. (OK, it’s probably languishing on your laptop somewhere, but you get my point.)
Years ago, I decided to take my writing more seriously and applied to join a novel-writing course run by a top literary agency. The classes were fantastic, but for me the icing on the cake was meeting other like-minded writers - several of whom I still swap drafts with now. Having people I trust read my work and give honest feedback made a huge difference to me, both in terms of polishing my manuscript but also by way of accountability and motivation. Anyway, something must have clicked, because between us we’ve had more than 10 books published now.
All of that got me thinking: what if I could be that trusted second pair of eyes for other aspiring authors? And so the idea for Your Author Mentor was born.
